British Values at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School

The Department of Education states that all schools have a duty to ‘actively promote’ the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values were first set out by the government in the ‘Prevent’ strategy in 2011. At St Mary’s Catholic Primary School we considered how we could best promote these whilst linking them to Gospel Values.

At St Mary’s, these 5 British values are introduced to the children, early in the year, in our Monday Gospel Assembly. They are introduced using the explanation posters below:

As can be seen, the term is explained in child speak and then linked to a relevant Gospel Value.
