St Mary's Catholic Primary School

Geography

Intent

As St. Mary’s Catholic School it is our intent to inspire curiosity and interest in the world around us. We are inspired by our semi- rural setting and wish to inspire pupils to explore their local environment as well as the wider world.

With our carefully planned curriculum cycles and E.A.T learning passports which provide first hand, rich and varied learning experiences.

Implementation

In Early years at St. Mary’s Geography is taught through the early learning goal ‘Understanding the world’.  Adults will support pupils through EAT opportunities and, led by children’s interests, to consider their local area and look at other countries, cultures and communities.

From years one to six pupils have dedicated Geography lessons within our two year planning cycle ensuring progress and coverage across mixed age classes. Full details can be found in our Curriculum Maps for Cycle A and B.

Impact

At St. Mary’s School we wish to ensure the impact of our Geography Curriculum is that pupils are inspired and driven to want to learn more. Skills progression will be evident and this is also shared on our planning overviews.

Pupils will be able to discuss what they have learnt and remember past learning often referred to as ‘Sticky learning’ and this is highlighted on our Knowledge organisers.

As a Catholic School, pupils will reflect upon Laudato Si and their duty as Stewards of the world to ‘Care for our common home’
