Class 4
Welcome to Class Four’s page for 2024-2025
Hello and welcome to Class Four’s page, here is our class scripture quote-
Autumn 2
Our topic this half term is The Anglo Saxons The Knowledge organiser for the topic is here- Angry-Anglo-Saxons.pdf
Our English learning this half term starts with the topic of Legends. We will read a range of Legend stories and try to identify common features. We will begin by studying the story of Gelert and trying to retell it by heart. We will then move on to reading a retelling of Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo. Our topic will end with children writing their own innovated version of a legend. Each English lesson begins with a SPAG starter and we will study complex sentences with ed openers, mixing action/dialogue/description and determiners.
In Mathematics, we will begin by learning about multiples, factors, square numbers, prime numbers and multiplying/dividing by 10,100 and 1000. We will then move on to a large unit of work all about fractions.
Our RE topic is The Ten Commandments. We will learn about how the Ten Commandments were given to Moses and then discuss whether they are still relevant to modern life. In History we will learn about the Anglo Saxons with our key concept being Migration. We will use historical artifacts to make plausible assumptions about how they lived and try to answer our two key questions- Why did the Anglo Saxons come to Britain? What can we learn from the Anglo Saxons from the discoveries at Sutton Hoo? We will also link our Art learning to our History topic by learning about Anglo Saxon weaving and then completing some weaving patterns of our own.
In Science our topic is light and the overview of the light topic can be found here- Science-key-knowledge-and-skills-progresssion-Class-4-Year-B.pdf (Please note, this topic has been swapped from Spring 1 to Autumn 2) In Computing we will learn about staying safe online and in PE invasion games starting with tag rugby.
Here you will find some information about our weekly routines and homework. Regular updates and photographs
will be shared with parents using the SeeSaw app so if you are not able to access this please just contact me. My email is taylor@lea-st-marys.lancs.sch.uk.
Homework in Class Four
-
- Reading – children are expected to read five times a week for at least 20 minutes. Some reading should be independent, however it is important that the children continue to share their reading experiences with adults too. Reading books will be swapped on Mondays. If children finish their books additional e-books can be found on the following website. https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/login?active-tab=students You can select reading for your colour band by selecting the book band option or you can select reading choices for your age group. You will need to login using our class username and password. Username- smlt3 Password MrTaylor(Please note the password has no spaces and a capital letter for M and T)
-
- Spellings– new spellings are given out weekly, on a Monday and tested on the following Monday. We are always encouraged to learn the spelling rule and not a list of words. Spelling lists will be taken home on Mondays but will also be posted on the Seesaw app.
-
- Maths – Children are actively encouraged to improve their knowledge and speed when calculating mentally. They should regularly use TT Rockstars – for which all children have logins and free to use apps or games including ‘Hit the button’ and ‘Daily Ten’. There are also a wealth of maths games on purple mash (please contact me if your child does not know their login). A short burst of daily practice will make a huge different to your children’s understanding and fluency.
-
- Homework – On Friday your child will be set a pick and mix style homework. We ask that this homework is completed for the following Friday. Please encourage your children to have a growth mindset by thinking- what do I know, what can I do next- rather than- I can’t do this! We always go through answers on Friday together. If your child is finding something tricky please contact me.
-
- Purple Mash- Every pupil has a login to purple mash to assist them in their learning. There are a range of activities they can complete such as the maths games signposted above. Please contact Mr Taylor if your child is unsure of their log in details. The website link is below.

- Times Table Rockstars- All children have a unique login to Times Tables Rockstars. This is a fantastic website which really helps to speed up children’s recall of multiplication tables. Please find the link below.
